For the Record: Presenting Yourself and Issues to the Court Effectively

Live Online Training

This seminar will provide a review of the system learned and used by attorneys to present rational and logical arguments to the courts.  Participants will explore the use of this system to present their credentials to courts and other pragmatic and ethical issues that necessitate the interpreter’s interjection into a proceeding.  The seminar will critically examine the case law, statutory, and ethical basis for various roles and decisions interpreters make and provide practice opportunities for interpreters.

Pre-requisite: ASL certification required. NIC at any level, or older RID certifications accepted

Course Overview

  • Participants will be able to state the three models of logical reasoning.

  • Participants will articulate the justification for providing various configurations of interpreters for different scenarios using a logical structure (major premise, minor premise, conclusion).

  • Participants will apply the model to scenarios and present those scenarios to the class.

  • Interpreters will present their credentials in an organized and confident manner during mock activities.

  • Comprehension will be measured through in-class presentations of self-created ethical quandaries, incorporating and stating the type of reasoning used to arrive at the various options.

Who We Are

DE LA MORA Institute of Interpretation is a fully remote online school that trains legal and medical interpreters to work in their respective fields. DLMII was founded in 1998 by Agustín Servin de la Mora from the vision and core belief that interpretation as a chosen profession deserved better educational options. We are constantly striving to stay ahead of the trends and learning styles prevalent in today’s interpreting field through various formats including in-person seminars, live online instruction, and self-paced education. Our mission is to foster understanding and communication through exceptional interpreter education and development, and to advance professional interpretation standards worldwide. Our vision is to become the most accessible interpreter education platform in the world.
